Description

The Yeongnam Alps, which run from the Mt. Gaji-Mt. Ganwol-Mt. Sinbul-Mt. Yeongchuk range, split in two as the Mt. Yeongchuk Sisaldeung Slope rises to Yeomsu Peak, and plunges south, stopping short of Baebawi Rock in Eogok. One branch runs southwest, spitting out Mt. Togok before plunging headfirst into the Nakdong River. The other ridge turns southeast, passes Maebawi Rock, then heads south, twisting southwest at Hwaje Pass to form the trunk of Mt. Obong before gently crawling into the Nakdong River. The Yeongnam Alps, after a vigorous and powerful run, concludes at Mt. Obong, with Mt. Togok just a big side branch.

Mt. Togok and Mt. Obong are facing each other, with Mt. Togok on the north and Mt. Obong on the south, and the Hwaje field spreading out in between, lined by the Nakdong River. To the south of Mt. Obong are the Mulgeum fields lining the Yangsan Stream, and across from them rises Mt. Geumjeong. Mt. Obong, which borders Mulgeum-eup and Wondong-myeon, is literally a ridge made up of five peaks. Peak 1 (530.8 m) is located just east of the Nakdong River, and Peak 5 (449.9 m) is located just short of Hwaje Pass near Gangseo-dong in the northeast. It is the last high peak in the low peaks group, against the flow of the mountain stream. At the base of the mountain are the ruins of the Imgyeongdae Pavilion, where Goun Choi Chi-won lived as a hermit. Originally, a poem by Choi Chi-won was carved into the wall of the pavilion, though it is hard to see now. A well-maintained walkway is greeted by tall trees, leading to the simple yet colorful traditional pavilion, which is a sight to behold in itself. However, you can see the real beauty of the location when you get to the top. The view of the Nakdong River from the top, which stretches out to embrace the sky, is mind-blowing. It is one of the best spots to see the Nakdong River, as well as the surrounding mountains and fields.
