Description
World Cultural Heritage
Tongdosa Temple is one of the three biggest Buddhist temples
in Korea and referred to as the Bulbo temple for enshrining the
genuine sarira of the Buddha. Situated on the foothills of
Yeongchuksan Mountain in Yangsan, Tongdosa Temple was founded by
National Preceptor Jajang in the 15th year of reign of Queen Seondeok
during the Silla period, and the beopdeung (lamp of Dharma) has never
gone out ever since. It presents awe-inspiring sights across the year
with red plum blossoms, colorful autumn foliage in fall, snow-covered
structures and land in winter, and a pine forest that stays lush green
all year round. It contains a number of cultural properties including
the Geumgang Stairway and Daeungjeon (Main Hall), for which it was
inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018. Enjoy a slow,
peaceful walk inside the compound and follow the sounds of the water
flowing down the valley and the refreshing scent of the pines and dive
into the rich nature, culture and history of the area.
