  • Tourist destination : Cheonseongsan Mountain (also known as “Wonjeoksan Mountain”)
  • Location : Ungsang (Pyeongsan-dong, Soju-dong), Sanbuk-myeon, Habuk-myeon

Description

Cheonseongsan Mountain Nicknamed “Small Diamond Mountain”

The most famous mountain of Yangsan, Cheonseongsan Mountain borders Ungsang (Soju-dong, Pyeongsan-dong), Sangbuk-myeon, and Habuk-myeon, and is 922 m above sea level. It has been nicknamed “Small Diamond Mountain” for its deep valleys, waterfalls, and splendid views. At this temple, the Buddhist priest Wonhyo preached the teachings of the Avatamsaka Sutra to 1,000 monks from Tang, enlightening them, and it was because of this that Cheonseongsan Mountain got its name.

In spring, the mountain is ablaze with azalea and royal azalea, and the Hwaeom and Milbat wetlands well conserve rare flowers, plants (e.g., a kind of pitcher plant), and other ecosystems for insects, making it a treasure trove of ecosystems rarely found elsewhere in the world. The edible wild greens from the mountain have such a superb quality that they were offered to kings in the ancient times, and in autumn, tall flame grass covers the entire mountain, creating fantastic mountaineering trails.

Notably, the summit commands a view of the sunrise over Yellow Sea the earliest in the Korean Peninsula, attracting many “sunrise tourists.”

Cheonseongsan Mountain presents Cheonseongsan Mountain Peak 1 and Peak 2, each renamed from Wonhyosan Mountain (922.2 m above sea level) and Cheonseongsan Mountain (817.9 m above sea level), respectively, and is also referred to as “Wonjeoksan Mountain.”

In addition, Cheonseongsan Mountain is a branch of Jeongjoksan Mountain Range, which stretches north to south through central Yangsan. This mountain branch splits Yangsan into the east and west areas and is the origin of Hoeyagang River. Together with Gajisan Mountain, Unmunsan Mountain, Sinbulsan, and Yeongchuksan Mountain, Cheongseongsan Mountain forms the “Alps of Yeongnam.”
